Preparing for your hut

Here’s our tips for making sure you’re all ready for your shepherd’s hut.

What do you need from your hut?

There’s all sorts of different huts you can choose from. We’ll work closely with you to decide exactly what you want and need from your hut - whether it’s a cosy retreat to put your feet up for a long weekend or a focused home office.

From here, we’ll be able to agree on furnishings and decorations to make your hut just perfect.

Infrastructure

Part of your considerations here should include what infrastructure you’ll need. Do you need fully electric or would you prefer to be totally off grid?

Getting hut-ready

Depending on where your hut is going, you may need to put some foundations down.

Or, a more environmentally-friendly way is to place railway sleepers down to support your hut. Not to mention, you can keep hold of the rustic feel of your hut when the grass continues to grow underneath.

Will you need planning permission?

Shepherd's huts, as mobile structures, will often not need planning permission to be sited in the land or garden around a house. However, there are some exceptions so we always advise that you check with your Local Authority planning department. You will often need planning permission in the case that there is a change of use of the site (for example if you want to set up a commercial business or glamping site), or if there is a special designation on the land (for example, if you are in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), the Broads, a National Park or World Heritage Site).

We’d recommend getting advice from an expert if you would like to use your Hut as part of a glamping business: Glamping Planning Permission
